Calcium

Calcium is one of the primary minerals involved in numerous bodily processes. It helps with several areas in the body, including helping to build and maintain structures like teeth and bones.

You can find calcium in dairy products primarily – in particular, for child dental health, we recommend getting a good quantity of calcium from cheese, which has a protein called casein that can help build strong tooth enamel in kids.

Magnesium

Another important mineral for both overall health and oral health is magnesium. Magnesium is actually part of the body’s absorption process for calcium, meaning it’s valuable in more than one way. It’s also important in building the teeth and bones. Magnesium can be found in nuts, grains, beans, various seeds and dark leafy vegetables.

Vitamins

There are a few important vitamins to keep in mind:

  • Vitamin A: Vitamin A is partially responsible for the flow of saliva, which is vital for cleaning teeth to prevent cavities. In addition, vitamin A helps keep mucous in the mouth healthy – this is important because it coats the cheeks and gums and puts them at a lower risk for infection. Foods with plenty of vitamin A include carrots, eggs, fish and sweet potatoes.
  • Vitamin C: Vitamin C is among the body’s healing helpers – it provides collagen to the body to help repair various areas. This helps oral health through healing of gums and fighting of inflammation. Vitamin C can be found in citrus fruits, including oranges, kiwis and grapefruits.
  • Vitamin D: Vitamin D is like the magnesium to vitamin C’s calcium – it helps vitamin C be absorbed into the body by signaling it’s time to the intestines, thereby helping the bones and teeth stay strong. Vitamin D can be found in eggs, fish and various dairy products.
